For those of you who decided to decorate home with KalaMitica pots, or for those who love fat plants and want to cultivate some species in very small boxes, here you find some hints about which to choose and how to take care of them.
It is true that their names are complex, but we are sure that looking at the pictures you will recognize them.
Crassula is one of the most popular fat plants, but to arrive here in Europe it did all the way from Nabibia. You can cultivate this variety of Crassula in every type of pot, including the smallest.
As much difficult is to pronounce its name, as easy is to take care of it: all you need is being careful about a few fundamental details. Let’s see what are they. Every spring you should arm yourself with a fat plants fertilizer, a liquid solution available for sale, then you have to mix it with some water according to the instructions on the label and give it to the plant once a month.
This procedure, since there is an addition of water, is also credited as “watering”; considering that the frequency it needs to be watered is the same also in the hottest seasons, once a month. Crassulaceae are succulent plants, which means that they collect water inside their tissues; they do not suffer of dryness, but they are very sensitive to excess watering, so be careful not to exaggerate. T
o allow Crassula mesembryanthemoides to grow strong and luxuriant you have to keep it in a semi-shady place and with a temperature never lower than 7 C°.
Opuntia microdasys albata
The Opuntia microdasys albata is one Cactaceae, the family of cactus, it is doubtless a very decorative plant, available also in a “mini version”. Before cultivating it, be sure to have at your disposal a pretty bright place, since this plant needs solar light regularly to be healthy.
To water and fertilize it, you can use a specific fertilizer mixed with some water, considering that irrigation must not be frequent, about once a month, or only when the topsoil is very dry.
From November until February, watering is further limited.
Another characteristics of Opuntia microdasys albata is not being resistant to excessive low temperatures: during winter the plant is better off inside the house, maybe next to a well-lighted window, where is warm.
Starting from spring until the hot season this plant will flourish with new leaves (called cladodis); you can remove those in excess according to the shape that you want to give to the vegetation around, and considering that this will benefit the health of the plant, which, if grown too much, in a little pot would suffer.
If you are thinking about Echinopsis, you need to be very careful with the choice of its place; in fact it needs the right amount of light. To understand whether the place you choose is suitable or not, you have to observe the plant: if it stretches too much, it indicates that the light is not enough. On the other hand, if its tissues harden and become brown, it means that the light is in excess. With a bit of patience and perceptiveness, you will find the perfect corner for Echinopsis!
Also in this case temperatures too low must be avoided: it should not stay below 10 C°, but also not above 30 C°, which often happens when a plant is put near a double-glazed windows.
The fertilization must be done during spring and summer, with the same method explained for the previous fat plants: diluting the liquid solution in water, once a month; however keep in mind that it is necessary to interrupt the practice during cold periods.
